The cycling club of 'LaMitnadev' successfully operates a cycling for coexistence club with Jewish and Arab children from the Mateh Yehuda municipality. It is our belief that the population of the municipality, live in isolation of their surroundings and of those with whom they share it. It is also clear to us that this isolation creates mistrust and antagonism. By bringing together Jewish and Arab children in the cycling for coexistence forum we are attempting to break down social barriers and change attitudes.
The projects strategy for achieving its goals: With the development of cycling as a popular sport in the local municipal region, 'LaMitnadev' saw an opportunity to develop a cycling club for the local youths of Beit Shemesh and the surrounding moshavim and villages. As cycling involves travel in the area it was an ideal opportunity to familiarize youths from Beit Shemesh and the moshavim of Mateh Yehudah with their neighbors in the near by Arab villages of Ein Rafa, Ein Nekuba and the joint Jewish Arab village of Neve Shalom.
The sport of cycling together with an educational program that will introduce the participants to each others cultures and to their joint environment will enable the development of an understanding between the Jewish and Arab participants and on going relationships.
Summary of the program, including specific objectives, plans for implementation, as well as anticipated results of the initiative; Coexistence on Wheels – The cycling club of 'LaMitnadev' successfully operates a cycling club for coexistence with Jewish and Arab children from the municipality. It is our belief that the population of the Mateh Yehuda municipality live in isolation of their surroundings and those with whom they share it. The municipality of Mateh Yehudah, of which Beit Shemesh is the main town, has in the past ten years become an extremely popular area for cyclists and the local municipality, Keren Hakayemet and green organizations have worked together to develope the cycling routes in the area. Today thousands of people come to the area to enjoy the cycling paths. The cycling club of 'LaMitnadev', is in its second year of activity, working with a new group of youths from Mateh Yehuda and the surrounding settlements. Today the cycling club has 20 Jewish and Arab participant, the youths learn how to look after their bicycles and enjoy cycling as a sport. Some of the children continue into second and third years as group leaders and assistants.
Objectives – Cycling is an extremely popular sport, it demands a high level of physical fitness and a complex understanding of range of accompanying skills. At the same time, the individual cyclist is prepared for the challenges that face him/her as a cyclist. The sport also widens the individuals overall personal skills by exposing them to a new and complex set of skills.
The main objectives of the group are to create a bridge between Arab and Jewish youth in the Mateh Yehudah municipality. To open for these young people a world of which they are largely unaware. We hope that by bringing the two national groups together we can change the stereotype created in the minds of these youths and offer both Arabs and Jews a new social perspective.
